password changes on own in dial-up networking box

I recently got this computer with Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1. I
had no problem setting up a dial-up connection, and it managed to connect
without incident each time. Then I downloaded all the recommended updates for
Windows XP, and I began having problems with the password in the dial-up
networking box resetting itself from the 6 digit one I have chosen, to a long
string of something else.

I am not SURE that it is the updates causing the problem: I also set the
dial-up networking box up at the same time to connect automatically whenever
I open an application that uses an internet connection. I was using Windows
ME before, and the set up for dial-up networking seems to be a little
different, as I couldn't easily find an option to make it do this. I may have
done it incorrectly as the dial-up box comes up as soon as the computer turns
on. (I chose "Always dial a connection" in the Internet options box.)

So! The password is changing to something I never set it to. I have changed
it back and saved password. I have tried unchecking "Save Password". I have
deleted and recreated the dial-up profile through Internet Options, and
Network Connections. I have changed from "Always dial a connection" to "Never
dial a connection". Nothing takes.

I would like to have the dial-up box come up when I open an internet browser
or suchlike, and I would like the password to stay as I set it. After doing a
little searching in past posts to see if anyone else has experienced this, I
cannot see anything similar. I realise that this may not be Windows XP
related but instead set-up related. At any rate, I hope one of you good folks
can help me out here.

Thank-you.

Are you basing your observation off the number of dots/asterisks that
represent the password? They are purposely a set number - no matter how
long your password is - for security. That way know one can even be sure of
how many characters your password is behind the masking.

Thank-you for responding.
Yes, I am basing the observation that the password has changed from 6 digits
to many upon the number of dots. However, I know that it is not MY password
as what clued me into the fact that my password had changed was the ISP
insisting that I had it wrong, and not accepting me. The only way I can
connect is if I go in manually and change the password.

Hello. I am not sure what happened, but MS found some more updates for me and
I downloaded them. I logged off, deleted the dial-up profile and created it
again. Then I tried to log-on again and this time there was no difficulty. So
it looks like somewhere in that group of updates was something that corrected
whatever was causing the problem.

Thank-you again for helping out.

This might help:

Open Internet Options, Connections tab, click the DUN connection to
highlight and open the settings. Change the password there and have
Windows remember it. OK your way out.

HI. The Connections Tab was where I was changing the password back each time
the computer couldn't connect. I can't see "DUN connection", but since the
last bunch of downloaded updates, everything seems to be working just fine,
so I think I'll just leave it for now.

I appreciate your help.
