I just bought an old computer at a yard sale for $10. It does have Windows XP but it is telling me I have to change the password which I can only do by using the OLD Passowrd. Aside from driving 2 hours to the house where Ibought it and ask the guy what it might be (and he had not used it for a long time he told me, so he may not even remember it), is there some way I can get to the desktop without knowing the old PW??
Thanks
Mike

Try booting into safe mode by tapping the F8 key,
On the Start - Run line, type: control userpasswords2
uncheck - user must enter a user name and pass word to use this computer

The older I get, the better I was.

If I bought a used computer, the first thing I would do with it would be to
reinstall the operating system cleanly. You have no idea how the computer
has been maintained, what has been installed incorrectly, what is missing,
what viruses and spyware there may be, etc. I wouldn't want to live with
somebody else's mistakes and problems, possibility of kiddie porn, etc., and
I wouldn't recommend that anyone else do either.

Jerry, I have the same problem but posted after this without doing a
thorough search for the subject (my failt). Is this the only and recommended
way? I'm the original owner and only user of my machine. Had Windows XP HE
prior to a reformat and decided to reinstall with Professional. Was
surprised to find the request for password continued to appear (I set it up
blank).

Thanks for helping me.
