passowrd recovery for Win2k

A recent employee was dismissed from my company an left
his computer passworded. i have been asked to get
it "unlocked"

But short of random guessing how can i get in to allow the
company access to the computer and the files?

I have tried calling to ask for the password, but short of
ripping out the HD and dumping the needed files
(contracts, daily security reports etc) then wiping the
drive and starting from scratch im clueless.

Any help is appreciated. please reply to my above listed

What do you mean by pass protected?
Is this on the Windows screen? What OS?
Domain or Workgroup?
