My son just moved into a dorm. How would he protect his
desk top so that others can not operate his computer when
he is not there? Please walk me through the procedure. Thx

You can block casual use by simply adding a logon password for each of the
user accounts that exist on the system. Don't forget to password the
default Administrator account and, if enabled, the Guest account.

Help and Support has directions on how to add a password.

To access the default Administrator account in XP Home: Boot to Safe Mode.
Log on with "Administrator" as user name. Leave password blank. Once logged
on, use Control Panel> User Accounts to add a password to this account.

For XP Pro, press Ctrl+Alt+Del twice at the Welcome screen. Again use
Administrator as user name. If Windows was preinstalled, the password is
likely to be blank. Use Control Panel to add a password. NOTE: If Windows
was installed from a retail CD, a password was assigned to this account by
the person doing the installation. Unless it was removed, there is no need
to add one again.
