I cannot figure out how to partition my hard drive. I
have tried the Microsoft Knowledge Database and the
instructions there did not work. The general 'Help' in
Windows itself gave the same instructions, which did not
work. I have Windows XP Pro. Anyone figure out how to
do this?

Unless you have available free space on your system, that is unpartitioned
free space, you cannot create a new partition on the fly, that is, without
losing all data on an partition whose size you wish to change using XP. In
order to do what you appear to want to do, you need third party software
such as Symantec's Partition Magic:
www.powerquest.com.

I spent months to find out how to do this. Unfortunately,
if you want to resize your current partition, it is not
possible under XP, because partitioning has to be done in
DOS - and of course ... Windows XP computers don't have
DOS.

However, if your hard disk still uses FAT/FAT32 file
system, and you have unpartitioned space on your hard
disk (ie. you have a 40gb hard disk and My Computer says
your drive is 20gb), boot into DOS using a Windows 98
boot disk:

Floppy:
=======
Boot without CD support, and when A:\ is displayed,
type "fdisk" (without the quotes) and press Y to enable
large disk support (you may also need to press enter).
Follow it through.

98 installation CDROM:
======================
Insert the CD and check that your BIOS boots from CD.
Then restart your computer and select the option to boot
from CD. Navigate your way to the command prompt (I can't
remember the exact menu structure) then type "fdisk"
(without the quotes), and press Y to enable large disk
support (you may also need to press enter). Just follow
the menu system through to create a secondary partition.
