hi ppl

1) ...i have a 20gig drive in a celeron900 with 128mb ram and XP pro

C: primary 5.5g OS & Apps
D: primary 0.5g Swap
E: primary 7.5g Archives and Corel temp

all are ntfs, the rest is unmarked and I game, graphic edit and torrent

Your thoughts???? on whether this is optimin would be appreciated...

2)... Would making the swap to an old slow 250MB drive produce any
speed benefit?

3)... I tried a 3g C:OS, 3g D:apps 0.5g D:swap which was definetly
faster than above but was problem-matic been I had to watch everything
I was doing.

4)... With 3) XP seems to only put about 45% of an app onto the D:
unless I was doing something wrong?

5)... Would 1 extended partition with 3 logicals be better than 3
primary partitions

Many thanks, I hope I have made the answers quick

Yes, very quick. It is time.... to change computer...
Then it won't be so problem-matic.

c'mon, be serious, why do i need to change computers?? I still use a 7
year old laptop (armada7800 built for ntfs) to do all but big bitmaps
.... but thanks for getting THAT one out of the way ... lol...

Running XP on a PC with only 128MB of RAM will be slow, regardless of
other hardware, so screwing with HD configs is a waste of time.

And, doing graphic edits on a <1GHz Celeron? Come on, mate. Get real.

Because you complained that is slow. It doesn't seem to be very speedy from
the specs you have submitted. Celeron 900, 20GB disk and 128MB RAM with
Windows XP does not constitute for a powerfull machine nowadays. As someone
suggested more memory is needed for sure (you did not specify what apps do
you use and how).

Bob, Running XP on a PC with only 128MB of RAM is not THAT slow,
regardless of other hardware, so screwing with HD configs is NOT a
waste of time and why spend $3000 for the time it takes to put on a cup
of tea or load of washing .. I work from home, real planning Bob, that
is wot it is about....

Hey Bob, how bout the lappy, is a P2 366 8g 128r with XP in a 1.8g ext
drive, you probably wernt even born then.. It also runs SE, 2K & RH5.2
14-12, just for the fun of it all ...lol..

c'mon ppl, I wasnt asking for speed, I was asking optimun...

OK. I would have a SINGLE partiton. All OS and apps installed. Defragged. A
fixed swap file of 500MB put on it.
I wouldn't bother with additional 250MB hd.

Add more ram. XP likes more than that. Doesnt cost much.

Not sure what you mean by that, unused presumably.

No point in a separate swap partition.
2)... Would making the swap to an old slow
250MB drive produce any speed benefit?

Nope, the only thing that makes any sense at all is more
physical ram so you dont use the swap file for much at all.
3)... I tried a 3g C:OS, 3g D:apps 0.5g D:swap which
was definetly faster than above but was problem-matic
been I had to watch everything I was doing.

You dont have enough physical ram.

The problem with small old drives for pagefile is random I/O leads
to seek times of 15ms or so. A USB memory stick is much faster.

Buy a 256MB DIMM on ebay. You machine seem like new.

ta for that ppl,
but every time i go to spend $50 on ram i think,
"gee, this 50 means root from local /pub" and that is my preferred
upgrade, lol.... I guess it all means I really shud install /root at
/home ...lol.....
