our domain is w2k native and no matter what is the FSMO role placement it
would appear that user logons and authentication is depended on one of the
domain controllers(first ever created) and not the others.

What would be the best tool to check integrity before possible upgrade to
w2k3 as well as do we have any control over whereto are the partitions
enterprise configuration, shema and [domain name] replicated to?

Check if dns round and roubin is enabled on dns server, check if you have
sites and related subnets assign.

- you can install support tools from windows CD, and run Dcdiag, Netdiag,
repadmin, rplmon...
- The Schema and Configurantion partition are forestwide partitions, they
are needed in all domains in a forest.
