Partitions in XP

i still don't fully understand how to partition from a clean install. the
main thing is that i should put windows on its own partition. if i do a
clean install, windows puts everything on c: and creates all the empty
documents folders for each user etc etc.

do i leave the 'my documents' folders etc on the c drive or do i immediately
move them to another partition and just leave the folder named 'windows' on
c:?

in basic terms, should i install windows and then leave everything that it
installs as it is, then going on to put programs etc onto another partition?

this would mean that users would still be putting their docs and pictures on
c: and not on another partition. is this the correct way to go about it?

thanks

I'm just a user and found that by using a 3rd pty partitioning tool such as
partition magic v8.0 you can set up your hard drive any way you want and
then set up the patitions by user. With one of these tools you won't lose
any data when you create the partitions although to speed it up you might
want to defrag the drive first.

im not a total expert here, but i will share my
experience, i had a 120gb hardrive from wester digital,
used their program to partition and format the drive, i
used ntfs and 512 byte clusters with 5gb for the os on
the first partition, then about 1.5gb that would be used
for a paging file only to speed up the computer
processes, that was also ntfs with 512 byte clusters.
then i put 15gb nfts, 2kb clusters. that would be where i
install all the programs like office or adobe or
whatever. I made another a 25gb with ntfs, 2kb clusters
and a 50gb with ntfs and 4kb clusters. these would be
for documents, mp3's, and videos, etc. the my documents
from the start menu still goes to c drive, but everytime
you go to save something, it always asks where and
folders can be created with user names on the 25gb
partition and these folders can be branched out into
organized file systems to help find the documents later.
thats as far as i got but it was the second time around
before i did what works for me. later i would go into
the system advanced menus to add a paging file in the d
drive that i set for 1.5 gb which is almost enough for
the 512mb memory chip, so if were to change anything, i
might add another gb there for room to expand in case i
got up to 1gb ddr memory later in the future. and oh, i
changed the paging file size to custom and 512mb, minimum
and maximum on the c drive because it needs one there for
another purpose, but the paging file on d was 750-1450
and since d is not gonna be used for anything else, the
program knows to use the partition that is access less.
good luck. and oh, if you do the math, i left about 10gb
on the hard drive unused which can be added later, or
maybe i will install linux on that extra space because i
am a geek :-)
