No, you need recovery software on a bootable CD with a removeable drive
or USB hard drive to copy the data. If you download, it better be on
another machine.

But if you are using the system in the meantime, forget it. Downloading
will overwrite your files just as surely as installing the undeleter.

I have made a bad mistake and lost some data and picture files. I've tried
to download some undelete programs.. but both I've tried gave a warning to
NOT install on the drive I'm trying to save the data on.

Is it possible to create a partition on a drive that is in use.. and will
this be like another drive that will allow me to try file recovery?

Thanks.. been using it since the 20th which was my last known time the files
were there.
Guess I'm outa luck.

How important is your lost data? Do you have a spare hard drive you can use
to recover files to that is as big or bigger than the amount of used space
on the drive you currently are using? There is software available (eg
www.getdataback.com) that will scan and recover files from a HD which is
corrupted. I've used this a few times w/o issue.

Hi JCH.. The data are not a huge issue. I'm not in anything professional..
It's just family stuff and studies I've written over the years. I can't
replace the photos.. can I live without them without killing myself.. yes...
but it would be great to have them back.

That said.. My last known time I had the files was 10 days ago. I believe
I've defragged the disk since them and I've added a utility or so. Even if
I could recover some of the files it would be great.

Question. I've downloaded a couple of undelete programs.. and all say (when
I'm trying to unzip them) to not do so if I'm opening it on the same drive
as the files I'm trying to recover. Now, If I have a friend download one
and unpack it.. and then burn it onto a CD.. would I be able to TRY to
recover some files.. not having the program on my HD?

Thanks, Bill

The odds of recovery are slight, since you have used the
disk a lot in the ten days. Defrag, if done after the files
were deleted could have completely over-written those files.

Yes, if you have a friend download and unpack the recovery
tools, you might recover the files, but you may not be able
to use those files if you recovery them, they may just be
random clusters.
