I have a OEM XP Home system that I have used for several yrs. It came to me
with one 40 gig HDD with C: and D: (recovery partition).

I would like to further partition C: Will I need third party software to do
this without lossing any files? Can fdisk do it? How does one move files to
create contiguous free space?

Thanks

You're better of buying a second hard drive and it will not be much if any
more than what you spend on partitioning software.

It will be infinitely more if the OP uses the fully-functional 30 day trial
of BootIT NG, which will partition non-destructively....

I think you can use 3rd party software. For example, Disk Director or
Partition Magic. I use Disk Director. I changed the size of partitions
with DD, it's easy in use. furthermore it isn't expensive.

Thanks for the replies,

JS, Unfortunately even $50 bucks is to much right now.

Gordon, I'm vaguely familier with BING. Probably the way I will go.

HP includes a method of deleting the recovery partition, if desired,
once you create a recovery CD. I assume other manufacturers provide the
same service.

However, if you want to divide the C: partition into others without
losing data you'll need third-party software.
