Just got a new laptop with a single 80 gb hdd and running Winxp. I am
new to both laptop and XP.
I am used to 3 or 4 partitions, or at least one for MS Flightsim with
addons. Also, is my "Partition Magic" software of help?

best regards
Ulrich

Why bother? Have you ever bought a new laptop that had more than one
partition? 80 Gig drives in particular would not see any reason to do so.

If you have Partition Magic 8, you will be able to add paritions. Just do
it in Safe Mode.

Be careful if you mess around with the partitions.

1. Many new computers, including laptops, come with a hidden "System
Recovery" partition on the hard drive that is used to restore the
machine to the "as it left the factory" state. Removing or even
modifying this partition could leave you with no way of reinstalling
your Windows, should that ever become necessary.

2. If your computer does have a "System Recovery" partition or a
"System Recovery CD/DVD then using that to reinstall your Windows will
often result in a total "slash and burn" of the hard drive contents,
including any additional partitions you may have created.

Good luck

As to whether or not to partition, only you can decide that. As to whether
or not Partition Magic would be helpful, YES. I would not consider
partitioning a drive without it. Ron Martell's reply raises a valid point,
"did the OEM leave a hidden partition for recovery and/or maintenance?" I
believe PM8 will reveal ALL partitions on a physical hard drive including the
hidden partitions. As always, be cautious, read up and have a plan before
you start partitioning.

Actually BootItNG (www.bootitng.com) is just as good as PM for
partitioning work. It has the advantage of lower cost, and there is a
fully functioning 30 day trial download.
