I have WinXP pro, I don't know how to find which version,
Not that it makes any difference in this particular case, but, for
future reference, Click Start > Run, type in "Winver" and press <Enter>.
The resulting dialog box will tell you precisely what edition and
version you have.
and I would
like to make a large data partition on my only drive.
A wise precaution. Placing data files on a partition or physical hard
drive separate from the operating system and applications is a good
idea. Doing so can greatly simplify system repairs/recoveries and data
back-up.
I opened computer
management and the instructions said to right click on unallocated disk
space. I right clicked everywhere : ) and no partition wizard pops up.
That would because you currently have a single partition that occupies
your entire hard drive; there is no unallocated space.
Can
WinXP do this or do I need to by some software?
Using WinXP's native tools, there's no way to do this without
completely wiping the hard drive and starting afresh. It's be a lot
quicker to use a 3rd party partitioning utility to reduce the size of
the existing partition, thereby creating unallocated space in which to
create your desired data position.
