I am running winxp 2000 and would like to know if one can
partition the existing harddrive without damaging the
running system and install on the new partition a new
system, lets say Windows98.

How to Multiple Boot Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows NT,
Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, and MS-DOS

How do I install Windows® 98/Me after I've installed XP?

The only way you can delete, create, resize or merge existing partitions,
and not harm your existing Windows XP installation, is to use
a third-party partitioning program such as Partition Magic 8
(www.powerquest.com).
