if I partition my HD does that mean if anything goes wrong with my C drive
and I have to format, I won't lose the data on the partition?

I have also looked in the help files to see how to create a partition but
what does it mean by
1.. Right-click an unallocated region of a basic disk, and then click New
Partition, or right-click free space in an extended partition, and then
click New Logical Drive.
Under disk management where do I right click a region What does that mean? I
have right clicked everywhere in that window and I don't get the option to
create a new partition. I am obviously doing something wrong, can anybody
help?

If you partition you can store data on that partition then format the other
partition without losing data.
eg you have a C & E partitions (D being a cd) win and apps on C, data on E.
C can then be formated without impacting on D. If you have an apps on D they
will have to be reinstalled as they create entries in various Win (C)
folders/registry.
In Win you can create a partition using disk management, but only if you
have an unallocated space on the origonal partition. It is most unlikely you
will have any unallocated space in a supplied sys.
Therefore in order to partition a disk, without having to completely format,
and lose all data/apps, a third party tool, eg Partition Magic is required.
