Hiya -

I am trying to find out if I can partition a drive in a
new Win XP computer without reinstalling the entire
operating system. I am looking to create a "virtual" file
server for my home office network. If this is not
possible, do you know of any other solution to accomplish
the same goal?

Thanks!!!

Partition Magic will help you here.

It supports run time partitions to be created while your logged into XP

I use BootIt Next Generation (BING) on several of my computers. It
can create, delete, move, and re-size partitions. It's also a boot
manager that lets you specify which partitions are visible in which
boot configuration. It also lets you image partitions directly to
CD-R/RW or DVD+R+RW-R-RW At US$34.95, it's a bargain, too:

There are support newsgroups on news server terabyteunlimited.com.

I have no connection with the product or company except as a happy
user.

Do you hope to run the file server at the same time as running XP?
The other two answers already posted will let you run one or the other (you
select at boot time), but as far as I know not both at the same time.
I think I have seen mention of systems that somehow allow two
partitions/operating systems to be active at the same time but I have no
idea if and how they work - safe memory and disk management would be
"interesting"!
