Is it possible to partition a hard drive after starting to use it, or does
it have to be done right at the beginning? (When I got this computer, it
already had XP and a couple other things loaded on it.)

You can always repartition a drive if you're willing to lose
everything on it and start anew. However no version of Windows
has ever included the ability to repartition non-destructively.
It can be done, but it requires the use of a third-party program
such as Partition Magic.

Hi,

Dynamic repartitioning, in other words "doing it on the fly" without
destroying any existing data requires a third party partitioning program.
The native drive tools cannot do this. Partitioning work, by its very
nature, carries with it a chance for corruption and loss of data, so backing
up before beginning is still essential.

Partitioning programs:

BootIT NG www.terabyteunlimited.com
Partition Magic www.powerquest.com/partitionmagic
Partition Commander http://www.v-com.com/product/pc_ind.html
Ranish Partition Manager http://www.ranish.com/part/
