Is there a way to partition a hard drive with an existing OS on it
without disturbing the existing OS?

Thank you.

There are free partition managers, but I'm not familiar with any
of them. Partition Magic 8.0 will do it for XP or earlier only.
It is not compatible with Vista, although Vista will install just
fine onto NTFS partitions created by it.

Yes. You use a partition management program like Partition Magic by
Power Quest. It's since been acquired by Norton.

http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/products/overview.jsp?pcid=sp&pvid=pm80

It's a bit pricey ($70US) considering how often a person might use it
(rarely), but I can attest that it works and is pretty handy to have
in the PC toolkit for when you actually do need it.

A competitor is Paragon's Partition Manager:

There's actually not a lot of competitors for this type of software,
but you can find a few others if you google "partition manager." Just
look for the ability to resize partitions as the term "partition
manager" seems to also refer to boot managers.

Do not forget to use UPS at the time you will resize partition, because if
you lose power in the midle of partition resizing - you will have a new
problem.

You actually need a full image of the physical drive
because PM can **** a drive even without a power failure.

I used Partition Magic for years until it was taken over by Symantec.
Switched to Acronis True Image and never looked back. Could never get to
grips with Ghost at all.

Visit http://www.bootitng.com and download BootIt NG. Unzip the file and
execute BOOTITNG.EXE to create the bootable floppy or CD, your choice
(accept the defaults). Now boot the BootIt NG floppy/CD. When the Welcome
to Setup screen appears, select Cancel (which aborts the install), follow
the prompts, and you will be taken to the BootIt NG desktop, now select the
Partition Manager (Work with Partitions). From here you can create, move,
delete, resize, etc., your partitions. You can even make backup images to
CD/DVD media, or an external USB/firewire HD, flash drive, whatever.

I realize this is 8 days late but I thought I'd add my comment for
posterity.

There's a free utility called parted, or Linux Gnome's Gparted
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/larry/resize/resizing.htm
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/larry/livecd/main/livecd.htm

You can find the livecd at
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php

Download and burn the CD,
reboot to the LiveCD and follow directions above to resize the partitiion
safely without destroying data. I've used it on my WinXP SP2 IDE and SATA
drives to delete, create and extend Win partitions without losing
data. (except for the partitions I deleted).
