Hi, Richard.
In Vista, we can use the DiskPart.exe shell to create an "extended
partition", and to create one or more logical drives within that extended
partition. But DiskPart is a very powerful tool with commands about as
clear and straightforward as BCDedit.exe (!) so I don't recommend it in
newsgroups often.
After creating the first 3 partitions as Primary Partitions, Disk Management
will create the 4th one as a logical drive within a new,
automatically-created extended partition.
Extended partitions did not die in Vista, but the method of creating and
managing them did. And there is almost no help at all for them in the Disk
Management Help file. :>(
Note that there is a very distinct and significant difference between
"extending a partition" and an "extended partition"! The first means to
enlarge an existing volume - either a primary partition or a logical drive.
The second means to create a partition that is not a primary partition; an
extended partition cannot be formatted or assigned a "drive" letter, but one
or more logical drives may be created in the extended partition and each of
these can be separately assigned a letter and formatted.
(I know that you know that, Richard, but others reading along here may not.)
