I had W98 installed on 10GB partition and then i have installed WInXP
PRo on the rest of 40GB disk(30GB partition).

Now i have a problem as i do not need w98 anymore and i want to remove
it to format it, but when trying to format it via Xp the popup says
'Windows was unable to complete the format!',
I have tried booting repair also, but the same thing, i have deleted
files from that partition and changed the name of partition.

the w98 was FAT32 partition table, and for XP PRO i see it as NTFS but
through some software it shows as extendedNTFS, if i do format it
through command prompt or any other independant software i get a boot
error which i'm not capable to repair, seems like there is no visible
WIN installations on computer via BOOTCFG.

How to format it thoroghly and to change it to ntfs partition table,
someone help !

If it were me I would remove the NTFS partiton, and increase the size of the
FAT partion to take up all the space, then format it to NTFS.
All of this can be achieved using this: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/download.php

Then you will need to install you Operating system.

Go via
/ Start / Control Panel / Admin Tools / Comp Mgt / Storage / Disk Mgt
This will show your single HD as Disk 0
and show its partitions. Select the 10 Gb partition and right click for
menu: then select Delete Partition.

To make a new logical drive, right click in the blank space (unused
space on Disk 0) and select from the menu Create Partition (NTFS.)

Assuming you wish to save the XP install.
What drive letter was assigned to the 10GB partition?
Have you checked to see if XP has its BOOT.INI on it?

YeS, i want XP to stay as i have my important data, installed and
arranged programs and services.
The 10G is C: , but on one occassion it wasn't when i have been
successfully managed to delete it and formated it through Recovery,
then the windows has automatically asigned C: to XP partition table,
but it didn't worked, it didn't boot. i do have a backup of complete
disk.

I didn't checked, i will check it.

Assuming C is now the primary partition, you probably still have to repair
your master boot record (MBR). Boot from your XP CD and do the repair. If
you don' t know how to do, just google on "repair mbr in xp". If C is still
an extended partition, change it first to primary with any partitioning
software.

thanks, i'm 90% sure that will solve the issue, it must be that it has
stayed as extended due to my wrong choices of partition programs,
it must be that on ultimateboot cd are all kind of partition programs
stuffed togetther but some really don't do any good.

problem solved.

Problem solved as i now have partition FAT32 where i could store some
text files, pdf, doc, odc, openoffice files etc etc.
I just want/ed to be sure of its consistency, that it's secure enough
for any kind of data throughoutput.

my mistake was not converted it into primary after formatin old win98
primary partition, and then repaired it through recovery.

Thanks again.
