Symantec has some information regarding the error here:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/powerquest.nsf/
pfdocs/2004055547264862

The last paragraph states:

PartitionMagic must be able to find the drive letter for each partition
before modifications can be made. If this is not possible, Error 117 may
be reported. Usually, the reason PartitionMagic cannot find drive letters
is due to one of the following conditions:

* There are partition table errors.
==>How do I fix these? Although I don't think this is the problem. I
tried creating Partition Magic boot disk and resize partition with an
error 'bad partition'

* A driver on your system is changing drive letters from their
defaults.
==>How to find out which driver it is. Then I can disable it. Don't think
it's the problem for the same reason as number 1.

* Your partitions do not have serial numbers.
==>How do I create serial numbers for my partition?

* You are running Windows NT from a logical partition.
==> I have windows XP Sp3 installed not NT. But if the article means XP
as well how would I work around this problem.

thanks everyone for all the replies.
