Partition a drive

I just noticed a post re. XP having all the tools necessary to partition and
format a drive. I just bought a new computer with xP installed, but no disk.
There is a licence i assume, as I got the computer from a major company.
Should they have given me a disk?
Does anyone know 1) What I do if I want to "boot from a CD" to partition the
drive, and 2) where do I find the licence information.
Thanks in advance

Manufacturers are not required to supply a disk but they are required to
supply a means of recovery. That means, they can put the recovery on a
hidden partition and supply you with a routine for restoring your setup.

This of course is inefficient and doesn't take into account that hard drives
fail and with them so do recovery partitions. You can try getting your
system builder to supply you with the CD or they might offer it to you at a
reduced price but this is at their option. Personally, if a system doesn't
come with a CD it's a deal breaker; unfortunately, most users aren't aware
of this policy until they get their systems home so they don't think to ask
ahead of time.

In order to do what you want as well as have access to the tools on the CD,
the recovery console, access to repair install as opposed to a recovery
offered by your system builder that will wipe your drive, you need an actual
CD, not a recovery CD but an actual XP CD. If you can't get it from your
system builder, one of the best investments you can make is to purchase the
CD at retail though I don't know what that might do to your warranty.
