A friend has a computer that got hit by the blaster virus, which I believe
has been removed, however she is still having problems, some of which may be
hardware related. The problem was apparently present before the virus was
present. The PC would only download from the internet one graphic file at a
time, and it would reset (? lockup) itself. After a reset the PC will not
start up again for about 45 mins. There maybe some error message about the
FAT at startup. I will be looking at the PC for her in the next few days but
do not know what could cause the 45 minute shutdowns, she has apparently
switched the computer off from the wall but still has this problem. Has
anyone any ideals? could this be hardware related. Also (off topic)the PC is
a Tiny PC if it comes to a reformat or install of windows I heard that Tiny
computers where difficult to setup has anyone any experience of Tiny
computers, I don't want to leave her in a worst position but have setup from
scratch several computers before.

All I can say about Tiny computers is have fun!!!!!!!
Seriously, if you use the restore disc supplied it WILL wipe
everything on the hard disk. I can't remember seeing anything that
says it is formating the disk while it is doing it but format is
definately what it does. It does warn you on the cover that it will
restore it back to its original state. After that, it not really any
different from any other box. If you were to add additional memory the
box can be a bit fussy as to what slots the modules are put in but
nothing that can't be overcome. I presume that the computer is running
W98/ME?? I thought the blaster virus only targeted Win2000 and XP
machines.

As for your slow downloads, strange because I've literally in the
past 2 weeks had to restore a Tiny box back to its original state to
overcome precisely the same problem. No amount of checking,
diagnostics, virus scans showed anything amiss. Used the restore disk
and the machine is running flat out again (well as flat out as a PII
800 will go).

The other things I would check is that fans are running and take the
PCI cards and memory modules out, then replace.

Thanks, I know that she has the restore disk, I asked her about the disk
that she had today, so its reasurring to that appart from the extra step of
the restore disk the rest will be standardfairly standard. I was concerned
about having "fun" setting up some driver in an obscure way. Her system is
XP just over a year old and thats about all I know about it and also she
does not need to recover any data which makes life easier. I will check the
fan is running and for the loose connections you suggested. From what I've
been told I think that the restore disk has a good chance of being put to
good use.
Thanks agaain

Kevin
