OK thanks for all that advise. Now for another question to this ordeal.
Should just dicth Front Page and go to another design program like
dreamweaver? By the way the site in quest about this is www.holidaymagic.us.

There is no instant cure. You need to do some reading on how web design works and work within the parameters. Dreamweaver will take you a lot longer to learn how to use, and will not solve the issues you are having...because the issues are web issues and not with the program itself.

Basically, you'd get the same results with Dreamweaver. It appears that you
have tried to start out with a design that is beyond your experience. No
software will give you the result you want if you don't know how to use it,
and that applies to any computer application, not just web design. If you
don't know the principles of accounting, no accounting software will balance
your books. If you don't know how to write, no word-processor will author a
best-selling book for you.

Basically, your design looks simple. That's good, but then why have you gone
into things like layers? You used a complicated process to achieve a simple
design. Start with something simple, and work your way up.

I also suggest that you not use the theme and come up with much better CSS
styles and nicer non-FP theme buttons.

I don't know about the Word Art, but you have fallen into another trap. For
the sake of art, you have come up with something that is difficult to read.
That's always a mistake. Don't let the art get in the way of readability.

Just looking at the traps page somebody mentioned earlier
(http://www.eleanorstravels.com/frontpage-dontdo.htm) and it mentioned not to
use wordart because it only works in IE.

could somebody please have a look at www.chuzzers.co.uk/q/ and advise me how
to create the "q" layout at the start of the page like that without wordart?

Thanks

Quick (down & dirty method):

While viewing the page...push Print Scrn button on your computer keyboard.
Open your favorite image/graphics editor
Paste
Edit/Crop & save as a .gif or .jpg (in the Q instance .gif is fine)
Import into FP
Then from there place the image into your design.

or

Just create it in your image editor...save as gif...Import into FP, place in design.

If you want to be a professional and charge people for making website you
need to think like a professional that means learning about html, css and
browser issues. It des not mean clicking a few buttons, adding text,
clicking some more and publishing. You must have a firm understanding of
the basics of web design and you can not rely on any editor to take care of
those basics for you. Frankly, if you have problems in FrontPage using
Dreamweaver will not solve them. Both FrontPage and Dreamweaver are tools.
What comes out of them is only as good as the person using them.

No need to apologize for that comment as far as I'm concerned.

If a person must use a theme they should but a good one that is either a
'one off' or at least has a limited release. Nothing like selling someone a
site only to find that a competitor has used the exact same theme. I've seen
it happen.

That's why I added a tutorial on converting from a theme to a custom DWT to
my tutorials site.

Yer welcome...

and if you want to create nice crispy graphics use a vector type image editor, then convert to jpg or gif..the difference is dramatic.
