I've gotten this error sevaral times in the last few days:

Details
Product: Windows Operating System
ID: 5
Source: atapi
Version: 5.2
Symbolic Name: IO_ERR_PARITY
Message: A parity error was detected on %1.

Explanation
There was a parity error during a direct memory access (DMA) transfer.
Typically, this means that the cable connecting the drive to the computer is
failing.

User Action
Replace the cable.

I'm on a laptop,(hp Pavilion N5250) the only obvious cable is the power
supply, so what cable is it that's supposed to get replaced? I'm pretty good
with written instructions and mechanical things, so is this possible to do
myself?

Don't know why you picked an Internet Explorer group to ask this question,
but your error message would seem to indicate that one of the cables,
internally/inside your laptop that connects to your hard drive or CD/DVD
drive is failing. Sounds like it's time to take the computer to a repair
shop, or call the place where you purchased it.

You could also post this to a hardware newsgroup, such as:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware

Jon,

Actually didn't intend to post to this group - have no idea how I managed
that.

Anyway, thank you for your answer. I was afraid that's what that error
meant. That stinks. It's got to be the hard drive. I don't use the cd/dvd
very much.

:)

You're most welcome, Lisa. Hopefully your computer is still under warranty
and it's something as simple as a loose cable connection. Good luck!
