Parent Crisis: Disallow ALL Internet Access?

Help! I have a teen -- need I say more?

Can someone please tell me how to completely block Internet access for a
specific user on a machine.

We have a computer that my daughter shares with my husband, and they are set
up as separate users. Actually, my daughter has two user accounts: one
where she can access Internet applications, and a second one that I tried to
make Internet access not available -- that's for when she's *supposed* to be
working on school work.

I can't remember how I accomplished that except that it was a lot of work --
removing things from the Start Menu, etc. And, I knew it wasnt' fool-proof,
but it worked very well for awhile, although I was always bothered that she
might figure out that many of the MS programs could get her online if she
clicked Help . . . Online.

Now, however, she's "discovered" the IM capacity of Windows Messenger
(whatever that is) and we've caught her IM'ing when she's supposed to be
doing school work :-(

She's not a particularly tech saavy kid (hence it taking her this long to
figure out ways around my lame attempts to make sure school work is done
FIRST), but I'm looking for a solution that will keep that "school" user from
having any Internet access while preserving Internet access for the "fun"
user, and for my dh user, who will go *ballistic* if he logs on and can't
access the Internet for his work.

Please tell me it's possible to completely block all Internet access for a
specific user, and please tell me how to do it! I'm very good at following
directions if someone can tell me how to accomplish this -- surely I'm not
the only person in this situation :-(

TIA,
Saundra

Have you tried...

Logging on under your daughters user account. Loading nternet explorer. On
the tools menu click internet options. Click connections, now , if your using
dial up, remove the connection, if you are using a always on adsl style
connection, try adding a fake connection that IE will attempt to use first.
This should also stop any 'help' pages bypassing your other measures. If it
works, im unsure as to wether it will knock out the settings for your other
user accounts, but its worth a shot.

This is not the answer you're looking for, but I believe you're searching
for a technical solution to a non-technical problem. If she's spending too
much time online and doesn't get her school work done, it is her fault
alone -- not yours -- and she'll have to abi

I have three teens, but I sit behind a firewall (a real firewall
appliance) and filter all the unacceptable content out of their
connections, but I don't restrict their access/use of the internet other
than that.

My kids use the computer for school, but there is really very little
that the internet offers most school assignments. Short of research for
a project or history lesson, I don't see where internet access helps
much.

As for over-use of the computer, put it in a COMMON room in the house,
where it's completely public, where you can see the kids on the computer
all the time. If you want to keep her OFF the internet when she's doing
school work, just disconnect the network cable and take it with you.

What you really need to do is teach the kids to respect your rules - if
you catch the kids doing something wrong, remove computer privileges
(even for school work - they still make type-writers), then removal of
phone privileges for 1 day, then more restrictions, then you can resort
to beating them :)

My kids know that during the school week that they are permitted access
to the computer for home work and 10 minutes for email - and we monitor
what they do (visual and firewall logs), and it's been fairly easy to
keep them in line with our rules.

In case you can't get to this level, there are applications that you can
install that permit you to completely restrict users based on the user
account or password.
