I just upgraded to Vista Ultimate and now my WD My Book & my iPod will not
install. the computer recognizes them as USB Mass Storage Devices, but when
it tries to install the Specific Devices Drivers it comes back with Failed
due to "The Parameter is Incorrect".

They worked fine before I upgraded and there was nothing on the Upgrade
Advisor about compatibilty issues of any kind.

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Thanks, Maggie

I just spent 3 Hours online with Microsoft Chat...

WINDOWS VISTA IS ONLY COMPATIBLE WITH "NTSF" FORMATTED DRIVES.

MEANING YOUR EXTERNAL USB MASS STORAGE DEVICES & iPODS WON'T WORK WITH IT!
If They are FAT32 Formatted you must reformat them to NTSF, if possible.

So I reformatted my Western Digital My Book from FAT32 to NTSF & guess what?

WINDOWS VISTA STILL CAN'T INSTALL THE DEVICES DRIVERS. The "Parameter is
Incorrect" STILL!!!!!!!!!

Amazing how Microsoft can spend 5+ years on trying to become a MAC and then
Fail horribly by restricting it's use to one kind of formatting and
non-compatibilty with everyday devices (Maybe this is their way of making
people switch over to Zune! - Sure hope they made it a NTSF System or it
won't work either).

I was really excited about the WOW! and all it has been so far is a DUD!

If anyone has any kind of help I would really appreciate it. I am very
frustrated! :(
Thanks,
Maggie

Thank you for your reply.

I was so frustrated yesterday that I was hoping someone who knew something
would reply.

The Support guy told me that Vista would not run anything FAT32. Can you
further explain how to fix the Device Driver issues I am having?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Again... :)

First, this is NTFS formatted.

Second, it's wrong. I have many FAT32 external drives and thumb drives and
all of them work fine with Vista.

Sorry, can't say. Could be that you need updated USB/motherboard drivers,
you might also want to be sure this is installed:

I too have been unable to get any USB drives other than external hard drives
to install or be recognized by Vista Business (getting the same message "The
parameter is incorrect"....I find it absolutely unbelieveable that a device
that's plug'n'go in any other OS can't be used in Vista. I also checked out
your KB link, but fail to see how this applies to this situation...care to
enlighten us?

I've posted this same advice many times (but I admit I've never seen
that particular error message before). This may or may not help, but
I know it won't do any harm, so give it a try:

Delete your C:\windows\inf\INFCACHE.1 because it may be corrupted. You
will need to edit its file permissions to grant Full Control to the
Users group before you can delete it.

Let us know if it works.

Actually I found the culprit...I have a Netgear SC101 NAS device that Ileft
the software and device installed while waiting for Netgear to release Vista
drivers. Someone in another thread had the same problem that went away when
he removed the Netgear software and device...I did the same, and all is well
now. Thanks for the response though, as it may help someone else.

I have 2 512mb thumb drives and just recently installed vista ultimate 32bit.
Vista installed all 8 usb ports and their drivers (generic) and when I put
my thumb drive in it came up on first time use new hardware... installing
hardware... your new hardware is ready for use. I open my computer and I see
my thumb drive. I did the same for my other thumb drive. Vista had no
problems with my usb thumb drives. It sounds like the problem everyone is
having is a device driver problem/conflict. Unistall your software for the
device and goto device manager and delete the device. Unplug the device from
the computer, restart, install the software back in along with its drivers,
restart, and plug the device back in the usb port. Let me know if that
works. I will also find more info about this problem and help out as much as
possible. Windows and I don't get alone very well! :-)
