Parallel port

I use a software key that connects to the parallel port in
order to use some custom software. It worked fine under
95/98 but not xp will not recognize teh key even though it
is connected. Anyone know what xp does to the LPT that 98
didn't do.

I think you will find that the software key (dongel) won't work with XP.

Replace "mail" with "36db"

XP doesn't allow direct user level access to the parallel port
hardware. You should try a small application called userport to
get access for some older programs. I've got a page below showing
how to access the parallel port hardware, with a link to
userport.zip.

I've used a parallel port key under XP.

I had the PC's BIOS set to use ECP, and the "enable legacy plug & play
detection" box checked for the port in Device Manager. (I don't know whether
either of these is necessary.)

The applications I've used that require keys use third-party applications to
read the keys, and those must be XP compatible.

WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K before it, will not allow software
applications to directly address hardware devices. This is one of the
reasons the WinNT family of operating systems is so much more stable
than Win9x. For a hardware security dongle to work on these operating
system, very specific device drivers must be provided by the
application's manufacturer.

If the application's manufacturer will not provide you with a
patch, new device driver, or product to render this legacy application
WinXP-compatible, you have little choice other than to replace it.
You'll need to acquire a version of your application that is designed
specifically for WinXP. Contact the manufacturer of the application to
see if any updates, patches, or upgrades are available.
