I recently installed Win 2k on my laptop. The parallel port
shows up on the device manager as ok, but won't see the
printer. I have tried restting the BIOS, new drivers, etc.
Can anyone help with this problem? Thanks.

Have you installed a printer driver? Start/Settings/Printers/
Add etc.

Assuming you're past that point, go into Properties for the
port in Device Manager, set it to use an IRQ. Also try
"enable legacy Plug 'n Play detection".

I am having the same problem on two computers I have
loaded Win 2k on. THe desktop will print when I change the
settings as you have described above, but the laptop will
not. I have tried several different settings on the laptop,
and nothing works. When I try to print, I get an error
stating the device is not connected. Any ideas that can
help me? Thanks.

Have you checked the cable? Tried a different cable?

Is the Spooler Service enabled and set to automatically load
during boot?

Is the printer listed correctly in the Printers applet in Control
Panel?

You might try deleting and re-adding the printer, and this time
*uncheck* the box that says "Automatically detect and install
my Plug and Play printer".

Cable is ok. I have tried two different printers, and it
doesn't see either one. When I uninstalled and reloaded the
driver, the computer never saw the printer (I had the box
checked (AUtomatically detect and install...) The printer
is listed correctly under the printers folder in Control
Panel. I'm not sure how to change the printer spooling
other than the printer properties. Is it possible that I
should be running FAT32 instead of NTFS? Would this make a
difference? Thanks.

No.

Check the parallel port settings in your system bios, and
compare them to the settings shown for the port in Device
Manager. What options do you have in your system bios
for the port? Try different ones (standard, bidirectional etc).

Was the printer powered on and ready when you installed the
driver? Some require this, others require that the printer NOT
be connected during driver installation.

I have tried all the sttings in the BIOS. I tried Auto,
Bi-directional, Customized and I tried all the different
ports and channels. Nothing. I have tried to load the
driver with the printer on, off, connected and not
connected. I think it may be something that Windows is
doing to the port or blocking the port. THe device manager
says there are no conflicts and everything is working ok. I
am running out of things to try. I have even tried to run
it in safe mode. Nothing. Any more ideas? Thanks.

Outside of a bad port on the laptop, I don't have any other
ideas. Maybe someone else does.

Just out of curiosity, what brand/model laptop and printer
is this?

The laptop and desktop are both Dell and the printers are
Canons and an Epson. I don't think it is a bad port because
both computers are doing the same thing. Thanks.
