Paragraph Spacing

J

Jake

If I don't finish a sentence to the end of the page and
hit the return key, the cursor automatically drops down 2
lines for a new paragraph. I would like to turn off this
feature and do my own spacing. Thanks

This is your paragraph spacing Style that you have set. To change it for
this document (or a particular instance), click the "Format" menu, select
"Paragraph", set the line spacing to "Single". You might have the "Before"
and "After" spacing set to "6 points", which is basically a double spacing
when using 12 point fonts.

To set it this way permanently, click inside that paragraph and look to see
what "Style" is displayed in the Style box on the Formatting toolbar. More
than likely it is "Normal". Click the "Format" menu and select "Styles and
formatting". Scroll up or down until you see the "Normal" style. Select
it, click the arrow and select "Modify". Click the "Format", "Paragraph"
option and make the permanent changes here. make sure the "Add to template"
option is checked and most definitely make sure the "Automatically update"
is NOT checked. Click OK and you should be fine.

Depending on how you have your global template saving feature set, you might
be asked if you want to save changes to the global template (normal.dot)
when you close your document. make sure you say "Yes" that way this change
will be reflected in future documents.

Good Luck!

It seems as though you're using ENTER to create a new line of text? If
this is what you're doing, it's the "typewriter approach" to word
processing. Instead, you should let Word flow the text from line to
line, which, among other things, allows you to add or delete text, use
justified text, change page margins and font sizes without constantly
adding and deleting paragraph breaks. Unlike a typewriter, Word needs
the ENTER key only to create a new paragraph.

If each paragraph of text is followed by a single paragraph break, you
can easily specify spacing between paragraphs as well as spacing
between lines. (If you use ENTER for "line creation" you never make
use of line spacing; instead, paragraph spacing is applied between
each line of text.) On the Format menu, click Paragraph. Specify the
desired paragraph spacing in the Space before and Space after boxes.
And specify the desired line spacing in the Line spacing box.
