Paperport replacement?

I've gotten tired of trying to get Paperport 11 to work reliably with
my HP all-in-one scanner and it's time to find something else. I like
Paperport but the bugs and no free support/forums is just too much.
The HP scanning software isn't reliable either and usually I have to
reboot in order to get it to scan to a PDF reliably. Yeah, I am mostly
going to scan documents to PDF as I am working toward paperless.

What do other people use to scan/organize your PDF files? Requirements
are an actively developed product(s) with support and hopefully a
forum where user support helps too. Oh, and price of course is very
important. :-)

I don't know the product fully because first of all it's out of my
price range, but how does that help to organize PDF files? I guess
Windows Explorer could do that but I'm looking more toward the
Paperport approach with thumbnails of the PDFs.

Thanks for the info on that. A little out of my needs though as it's
web based and this will be just for me. I did download a trial of
Adobe Acrobat and it does have an organizer so that might work well.
The only negative is it's still out of my price range. I see people
selling the professional version for < $150 so not too sure about
those.

I have taken a look at some other products under the $100 mark but
nothing really jumps out as a great replacement for Paperport. Some
work fine with PDF files but then it's the scanning capability that's
lacking. I'm surprised that nobody else is going through this and
found solutions to try and get paperless.

Why not just upgrade to a later version of Paperport? Paperport is still
around.

I get offers from Nuance all the time, $100 for various software Nuance has.

If you dig in Nuance web site, you can find similar offers, If you own a
pervious version of paperport.

You might like to check out the Yahoo! forum on PaperPort. The folks
there can usually help to fix many problems. They are certainly
better than Nuance's non-existent support.

Forget the suggestion that you buy Acrobat. It is wildly overpriced
and is not the same document management front end that is PaperPort.
Unfortunately, there aren't many alternatives out there.

If you are outside the USA Acrobat is even less an option because
Adobe thinks that it can gouge foreigners. We get to pay more than
twice the domestic price because the dimwits at Adobe failed to
recognise that foreign currencies are not all equal. Actually, now
that the dollar is banana republic territory, even the oil sheiks and
Chinese are moving into other currencies.

FYI, I did try the Yahoo PaperPort forum and they responded nicely.
Unfortunately, it didn't solve my problem so I bit the bullet and got
Adobe Acrobat which so far is working fine. I just don't like how it
lets the scanner driver handle everything. For example, my HP all-in-
one's software is not good so if I wanted say an all black and white
scan in a certain resolution, I need to do that for every page that
goes through the ADF. Programs like VueScan can control the scanner
completely and you never have to see the scanner's software.

I'm almost considering searching for a scanner that has better
software and that works perfectly with Acrobat.
