After installing Vista RC1, there's a folder created in \Windows directory
called 'Panther' which has some log files and other files.
Does anybody know why this folder has been named as Panther?
Does this folder still there in Final ver. of Vista?

That is the folder where setup logs are stored.

\windows\panther folder is in RTM. Looks like Windows setup stuff. Why they
named it Panther? Dunno.

Lang

Yups. The folder was in Beta 2 and the final version (RTM). Hey, they had to
name it something...

Panther is the genetics term for the birth of a mamal that wanted to be a
Tiger but did not have enough of the genetic code appropriate to become one

However, in the annals of genetics there is a convoluted history where the
tradition of steeling was upheld by both the Panther camp from MSFT and the
Tiger camp from Apple and both stole from Xerox Park and IBM.

Microsoft like to use the names of places, colors, and other things that
cannot infringe on copyrights. Other than that, who knows. Ben Armstrong
of MS told me one time that they have a service running at MS that they can
pick names from for projects, etc. Who knows.

????

Is everybody missing the point that Mac OSX 10.3 is called Panther? I think
it was a bit of tongue-in-cheek at Redmond.

ss.

No, no one is missing the point. When I asked in a TechBeta chat about the
name some time ago we were told that the usage predates OS/X Panther. It
may not even be new to Vista.

Along these lines, why does an XP install leave an empty folder called xerox
in Program Files? It contains another empty folder called nwwia.

I've always wondered about that.

Mike

It is a hard-coded folder like My Pictures and such. One of those that
keeps coming back when you delete it. It is provided for Xerox scanners. I
don't know the background beyond that.

I think the XP Fax and Picture Viewer used soem Xerox code or something
IIRC, but I may be remembering wrong..

ss.

Yes, it was due to something like that.
