I have installed and used PALTALK for some time now but I was disturbed to
read that privacy may be an issue with it, particularly where file transfers
are concerned. So what are the general thoughts on using this program and is
there a similar but better program that I should be using? I already use
Bitwise but that does not do voice.

I don't know if it is safe or not. I used it a few years ago, but didn't
pay attention to anything like that. What do you use it for? If you use it
to talk to people that you know, you can use ICQ to talk to them. I have
used it and talked to people all over the world. You can also use MSN
messenger to talk to people.

If you are looking for voice chat, yahoo messenger has voice chat rooms. I
don't know if they are more secure or not. I'm sure there are others that I
don't know about.
Well what I like about Paltalk is the fact that you can speak to your buddy
privately and not be interrupted by someone who finds your name on a member
list. I have not tried ICQ (Is it bloated?) but I did have Yahoo one time
and got messages from silly girls who wanted me to visit their websites to
see them naked. In the end I got fed up with that and cancelled my account
as I am sure others have done as well.
So when I talk about Privacy in the same breath as Paltalk I am not meaning
the above as it does seem quite private- I am talking about interception of
files being transferred (as I read somewhere when searching out anti-spyware
programs. Also I find with Paltalk that the ads interfere with the quality
of voice transmissions.

It seems like all of the messengers over the years have gotten kind of
bloated. My favorite ICQ was 99b, but that one won't work any more. I
guess it depends on what kind of machine you are running. You can set up
ICQ so that only your friends can contact you. I think the quality of the
transmissions might be better with paltalk, though I'm not sure of that. You
should check the settings on paltalk and see if you can block messages from
people you don't know. I know that you used to be able to chat with people
on your list without going into chatrooms.

There are other programs you can use. Look up pc to pc calls or ask someone
here about them. Basically it does what you are looking to do. I used to
be into that stuff, but I could never find anyone that was interesting to
talk to.

Ever tried WASTE? http://sourceforge.net/projects/waste/

WASTE is a mesh-based workgroup tool that allows for encrypted, private
communication between distant parties on the internet, independent of
local network organization.

I use it with some friends and love it. Once you setup your firewall
and/or router properly the single port WASTE uses shows up as Stealthed
when the program is running. Fantastic program for secure, encrypted
file sharing and chat!
