Paint and .imf files

When I try and download a .imf file it gives me an error
message that paint can not read this file, it is not a
valid bmp file or its format is not supported. How can I
get my computer to support .imf files?

That would depend entirely on the program that was used to create it.
That particular extension is used by several different programs for
different purposes. So the short answer is to find out where it came
from so you can get a program that reads it.
