Paging file setting

I understand keeping the paging file on a separate partition is a good idea.
I wonder then what size should I make the paging file or should I let
Windows manage it. Also, how large should the partition be?
How bout on a WinXP Pro?

General rule of thumb is that the paging file should be
1.5x system memory. Let Windows manage the page file once
you have set the partition. Make the partition <2GB.

I will have 1G of Dual DDR. Does Win2000/WinXP know to limit the paging size
accordingly without any problems? Is it ok to set it on a partition of the
same HD where the OS resides (which will be C:) or do I need to partition on
a second drive (which will be the data drive)

Windows typically does a very good job of managing the paging file in most
situations. As far as which drive to place it on, you will see a slight
performance increase when the file is on a drive other than the system
drive, but it will work fine on the same drive as the operating system,
assuming you have sufficient free space.
