Hi Chris

Jimmy S advised me to check with you on the issue below.

I've got an old version of MS Golf 98 installed on my PC. I've not
played it for a while and when I attempt to open it it now returns a
message about "golf 98 requires at least 32mb of free virtual memory
....etc"

Now as this PC has 1GB of physical RAM and 1.5GB of pagefile, and task
manager is showing 800+mb of physical RAM free I'm guessing a shortage
of memory is not the problem ...

The rest of the spec of the PC is

AMD1400 CPU
Nvidia Quadro II Pro
80gb free hard disk space
F-Secure AV
Kerio FW
Windows 2000 Pro SP4 with all updates applied.

Anyone come across this prob before?

PS I've tried compat mode but no change. It was working at one time.

Darn him! 8-) Have you tried installing using Compatibility Mode? Not
just running it that way, but starting from going to Start/Run/Browse and
using Compatibility on the setup.exe file on the root of the CD? Make sure
you've got all your anti-virus and any third-party firewalls disabled.
Remember, AV and the firewall program do not necessarily quit when you
"exit" from the Systray icons.

I'm wondering if it is getting confused because there is too much
available memory, somewhere in the back of my fading personal
memory cells I seem to recall an issue with older stuff getting
confused in this manner because the programmers never expected a
machine to have the memory capacity common nowadays.

Hi Steve,

Good theory. Feel like testing it through practical application? :-)
Seriously though, 1G RAM is great for servers, however 512 is
the "sweet spot" for a home system used for various applications.

I wouldn't think so, if you're using Compatibility Mode to install from the
beginning. I don't have that version, so I've never tried installing it.

nope ... installing it using compat mode made no difference. I can still
use it though 'cos my XP Pro laptop runs it fine ..... weird cos W2K
used to and apart from the standard MS updates the only thing that has
changed on the machine is the additional 768mb of RAM that went in 6
months ago ..

Ack! I failed to note you're running Windows 2000. LOL! DUH! Don't know
what to tell you other than "sorry." But would suggest you get yourself
Links 2003 (and update it from the Links web site), for a little bit of
"real" golf. 8-)
