When I click a link in a newsgroup the page it requests will load over a
page I already have displayed in IE. There is some setting that will force a
new instance of IE with each click event but I can't remember what or where.
Comments please...

Hi clinton :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

From IE> Tools> Internet Options> Advanced> Browsing> uncheck "Reuse windows
for launching shortcuts.

or....

How to open Multiple Browser Windows
http://navigators.com/multiple_browsers.html

also...

Courtesy of Frank Saunders -

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

3. Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded.

4. If that doesn't fix it, see this article:

http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#new_window

5. If you are using WinXP try this:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/reg/IE_Default_Browser.reg

You can also try this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC (msconfig for WinXP).
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk' ("Expand File" for WinXP).
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which is
probably in the Win98 (i386 for WinXP) folder of your installation CD-ROM
(typically D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs (Windows\i386 for
WinXP) folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System (C:\Windows\System32
for WinXP), and click OK. System File Checker (or msconfig) looks for the
file, saves it as you requested, and then tells you that 'the file has been
successfully extracted'.

You may need to reboot.

If these steps do not resolve your problem, or you need help with the above,
please post back to this thread with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Jan :)

Hi clinton :-)
Thank you Jan but that item is unchecked.

Did you try the other suggestions? Did any of them work? Here's another to
try if you like<

Windows Size by Charlie Tame:

There's also AutoSizer, a free utility here:

Concerning the IE overwrite (when opening New Window, old one
disappears)-Clint's reply (and Frank G's website & suggestions) saved my
bacon.
Apparently when I tried to install a new hard drive via my PCI bus, not only
did I wind up with days long IO search before start but a total screwup of
several files....FUN!
Anywho...once I removed the HD (Hitachi ATA), I was a normal startup (WinXP
sp2) but the IE 6 had these problems. Yeah, funsies.......! (totally bites!)
So, I recommend that this be GENERALLY POSTED on the main Blog & MS sites so
that people can access it pronto. But, that's just me.
YOU?

Hi Jaasak :-)

I can understand your frustration, but, Clint did not say if he had tried
the other suggestions that I provided, therefore, we don't know if he tried
them and they did not work or not. Did you?

Also, if you have Yahoo Companion, Google toolbar, MSN toolbar, a firewall,
Earthlink (or another pop-up blocker) My IE2 (a shell for IE) etc.
Yahoo Companion is a very common cause.

You'll have to turn off the feature that's blocking new windows or, perhaps,
uninstall the program (especially uninstall Yahoo Companion).

With some programs of this type, using Ctrl+click or Shift+click will allow
a new window.

If you're *sure* that another program isn't causing this, these links may
help.

I have the Google Browser Helper installed and tried using its blocker
over-ride on all of the URLs you provided in this.thread Frank but that did
not change the behavior which I note only seems to occur in the newsgroups
not websites where new instances of the browser open as expected.

Hello Jan,

No I haven't had time to try other solutions yet.
The many resources that you and Frank Saunders provided will keep me busy.
Its strange because the behavior is not present when using websites, only
when using the newsgroups with OE.

Oh!
If it's pages that you are opening from OE, that's a known "feature". I
don't think there's anything you can do about it.

<<<<Also, if you have Yahoo Companion,>>>>>

AAAaaahhhh, now THERE WAS THE PROBLEM THAT STARTED IT ALL!!!
YES, INDEEDY!!!!
Thank you, Franky, for that VERY enlightening point.
Indeed, that's when I noticed the change and the foul-up of the IE.

Yep, watch it with that Yahoo Companion-a real nut-cracker if I may say
myself.
Whew!
But again, thank you & bless you for that timely info. I C&P'd onto Word and
saved. Good point....

Two things to try though:

1. Press Shift+Enter on a link
2. Use Jim Byrd's tip about deleting the DDE Topic value.

The default is WWW_OpenURL. Perhaps he got the idea
as the reverse of:

<title>KB199292 - Opening Picture Files Opens New Instances of Internet Explorer</title>

The keyboard over-rides do not work for me but thanks for the KB referral. I
just read quickly and if I can find some time I will review further and
determine if whacking hyperlink DDE values will result in some progress.

My OP did state the problem occurred when using newsgroups.
I'm sorry for wasting everybody's time but at least I got a bunch of IE
resource referrals out of he deal :-)

The keyboard over-rides do not work for me

And they have stopped working for me again too. ;(
I'm pretty sure Shift-Enter *was* launching a new IE window.
(Shift-click hasn't been as reliable though.)

Another thing that I do for this case is quickly shift to the
window that is loading. If it contained something that I still want
I press Ctrl-N. Often that causes the old thing to launch in its
own window and then leaves the old window to be reused by the
new thing. In this case I guess it helps to have a slow Dial-up link. :)
