pages keep scrolling

Hi all,
I'm working in MS word. When I open my document that I'm working on, the
pages keep scrolling, although I remain on the same page. In other words, I
open up the document and on the bar at the bottom, it says page1/1, then
keeps scrolling 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, ..........1/5,000 and on and on. This doesn't
happen on my office computer, which is the same. What can I do? thanks!

As Jay noted the likely cause is an infinite repagination loop. Does your
document include graphics or embedded objects? If so then that could be a
cause of your problem.

I don't necessarily have a lot of specifics on this, but from what I can
gather it has to do with the paragraph the object is anchored to.

Word is attempting to keep the paragraph on the page, and since the object
is also anchored to the paragraph it's trying to keep it on the page, so it
goes to the next page, and tries the same and fails again,
so it goes into a continuous repagination loop.

It may have to do with the Keep Lines Together Property or it could be one
paragraph is spanning multiple pages and the object is looking for a
paragraph mark to anchor to, and cannot find it,because no paragraph either
begins or ends on that page.

The best way to attempt to correct the problem is to install another printer
driver (note you don't need a physical printer to do this) and if your
current printer is an ink jet then install a laser jet and vice-versa. An
ink jet and laser jet have different print areas so chances are another
printer driver will paginate the document differently so you don't encounter
the infinite pagination issue. Note you'll need to switch to the newly
installed printer prior to opening the document in Word. Either set it as
the default or open any document, go to File/Print, select the printer, then
close the dialog box without actually printing. If the document opens
without the pagination issue then check the items I noted above.

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

Hi Jay,
I tried the first suggestion in the "corrupt document" page. It didn't work,
but I'll try again in the morning. Thanks from a computer retard. geodork

Hi Beth, and thank you for your note.

I wanted to add that in my experience, this is a particularly common and
very bothersome problem that has affected at least 3 versions of Word (6.0,
2002, 2003). It comes up frequently in my work in the context of putting
together manuscripts and grant proposals in which large figures are
interspersed with text. I am posting this note to strongly encourage
Microsoft to please look seriously at this problem and come up with a
definitive way to prevent it or, at least, to limit it's destructive effects.
On several occasions it has created grave difficulties trying to get
manuscripts and proposals finished on tight deadlines, when suddenly in the
course of a minor change (like inserting a sentence), Word gets into an
infinite pagination loop and it takes hours to figure out how to get past it.

Regarding your advice below, if there is anything you can do to make your
suggestions more definitive (i.e., that focus on things that "will" work vs.
"may" work), I would greatly appreciate it. Also, if you could please do
anything you can to get this problem to be recognized as having a higher
priority for resolution by Microsoft, it would be appreciated by a large
community of research and business users who need to use Word to create
complex documents. Although I find no mention of the problem on any MS
Knoweldge Base, I know many people who have been affected by it. I have been
in many discussions where I or another have mentioned the infinite pagination
problem and other people in the room grumble and nod about having experienced
the same thing.

Thanks very much,
--- John Aach
