It sounds as if you may be entering the page numbers as plain text. It's
also possible that you have unnecessary section breaks. In any case:
1. In the header or footer pane (View | Header and Footer) use the Insert
Page Number button on the Header and Footer toolbar to insert a page number.
The number format will be 1, 2, 3 by default.
2. If you haven't changed anything anywhere in any section, the default
number format will be "Continue from previous section." If you see numbering
restarting at one in any section, press the Format Page Number button on the
H&F toolbar and change from "Start at 1" to "Continue from previous
section."
