I have a document which contains the following

A cover page
Abstract
Table of Contents
Chapters 1 - 5

I have used section breaks to seperate them all, except
within the chapters. I want the page numbering to be as
under

cover page - no numbers
Abstract - i, ii, ...
Table of Contents - no numbers
Chapters 1 - 5 should be continuously numbered from 1,
2 ...

when i go to the chapter 1 section and insert page
numbers, page numbers also appear in the cover page and
table of contents pages.

I tried deleting the page numbers in the cover page and
the table of contents through the "View Header/Footer"
option...but it deletes the page numbers in all the pages.

Can someone tell me how i can get page numbers in the
document only for the abstract and chapters??

TIA

Sasha

In the Header/Footer toolbar, there is a button "Same As Previous" 5th from the right (2 pieces of paper with a right to left blue arrow under them). It is usually depressed, which will cause continual page numbering

1 - Clear all page numbers
2 - If you have section breaks between the sections, go to the 1st Footer of the 1st page of the Abstract and press the "Same As Previous" button. This will "unlink" the footer from the Title section
3 - Insert your page number & format it
4 - Go to the 1st Footer of 1st page of the TOC and press the "Same As Previous" button. This will "unlink" the footer from to Abstract section. No page numbers so no need to insert/format
5 - Go to the 1st Footer of 1st page of the 1st Chapter and press the "Same As Previous" button. This will "unlink" the footer from TOC section
6 - Insert your page number & format it

Same works for the headers - they will all be the same unless you do these steps for the header
