Click Insert > Slide Number.
Put a checkmark on Slide number.
Click Apply to All (to apply it to all slides), or Apply (to apply to
current or selected slides). Hope it helps.

Thank you for the suggestion, but that does nothing at all.

In addition, if you have anything on the slide in front of the Master
background, the page numbers will not show thru.

Do you have pictures on the slides in the area where the page numbers are on
the master slide?

Yes I do. It is a four letter word, a typed logo, not a
graphic. The problem is, I cannot "get to it." It is there
but not in a regular text box and not in a footer. I have no
idea how to change it, move, it. etc. It sits on the lower
right corner of every slide, so I assume it is part of a
master slide, but even in attempting to edit the master
slide, I cannot access it. Any ideas?

Make sure you have the page number placeholder turned on:
view->master->slide master then format->master layouot->tick page number

Does that fix it?

Lucy

No. No fix.
In fact, I do not have the choices you describe above. This
is what I see:
view> (no "Master,") >slide master> (no "format"" > *Master
Layout grayed out* > (no page number option).
What did I miss?

What version of powerpoint are you using?

Thanks for the lead.
Well, that article lead to another, etc.
When I put a footer on all slides (insert (text) header and
footer, check footer, apply to all), and then right click
the footer and then click on insert (text) slide number, I
get that slide numbered. In order to number all the slides,I
have to do it for each and every one. Very clunky. Not
intuitive.

Hmmm

I can just go insert -> Header & Footer -> tick slide number -> apply to
all. I can then go View -> Slide Master and drag the box with the # to
anywhere I want.... Not sure why you need to do them all individually as that
must be a pain :-(

In this particular show with 61 slides, there are a plethora
of "master slides." I have no idea why since, I only use one
style. I can do what you instructed, but not on all the
master slides, just a few. My REAL master slide, will not
take slide numbers, let alone apply to all. I see how it
works because, on your guidance, I did it on one the
"alternative" master slides. But it will not apply to my
master slide.
The only way to number is create a footer and place the
slide number function in the footer.

Thanks for your efforts.

In case anyone is interested, I got the file and it wouldn't behave. At all.
So I inserted the slides into a new file without keeping source formatting,
copied the logos etc across and voila! all is well :-)

I followed your "off-post" instructions. I copied the slides
in the existing problem file to the clipboard. Then I opened
a new project. Then Home Slides New Slide Reuse slides (but
no option to tick/untick 'Keep source formating'). I pasted
into the new (blank show.). The graphic logo and type logo
did not transfer to the new master, but the rest of the show
came over OK. The old show had page numbering in a footer in
the bottom center. Those numbers came across, on a slide by
slide basis (I did not number a few slides). When I used
Insert text Slide Number (tick only slide number) Apply to
all" the same existing page numbers jumped to bottom right.
The slides that were without number remained unnumbered. I
added back in the logo and graphics to the new master slide
(view slide master), but the graphic only appears in one
slide, it does not stick to the presentation. I have to
wonder whether my PPT 2007 is the same as yours?

Hi

There's been a bit of confusion - the file I sent you had been fixed up. You
didn't need to go through the 'reuse slides' steps as I already had :-) On
the copy I sent you, the numbering appeared on every page in the middle as I
dragged the placeholder there (the one with the '#' in master view).

About 'reuse slides' - you don't need to copy anything to the clipboard.
Just open a blank presentation -> home -> new slide -> reuse slides -> browse
-> find your original presentation -> keep source formatting tick box is down
in the bottom left hand corner of the taskpane -> right click any slide ->
insert all slides. This replaces the old insert -> slides from file that was
in 2003.

Then I went view -> slide master -> selected the top one (the master master
if you will :-) ) -> insert -> slide number -> ticked 'slide number' box ->
apply to all. I then clicked + dragged the placeholder (textbox) with the '#'
to the middle (again on the master master) and it moved on all slides. While
still in master view, I copied & pasted the 2 logos from the master slide of
the original presentation. Back to view -> normal and slide numbers & logos
appeared on all slides.

As for version, I have 2003 & 2007 on different machines - I used 2007 for
your file but saved as a ppt (not a pptx) as that was how it was when you
sent it to me. I do wonder if the original problem was due to being opened in
different versions, but couldn't say for sure.

Is that clearer?
