Adrian

Hi
I just installed a new Windows2000, and a cable modem. I don't understand
why sometimes it can go online, sometimes not and just said page not found.
Sometimes after I restart the computer, and it goes online again; and when I
used for a while, it drops off the line again. Why so? How may I find out
the problem is? Thanks in advance.

Adrian

Hi Adrian :-)

You don't say which version of Windows or IE you are using (SP!, SP2), so I
will have to take a guess here.

For the connection drop offs

Power Management adjustments to stop connection loss

Start>Settings> Control Panel>Network and Dial-up Connections>Local Area
Connection>Properties>Configure>Power Management tab>uncheck “Allow the
computer to turn off this device to save power.”

Check your firewall, Zone Alarm Pro and @Guard can cause connection
problems.
If you have Yahoo Companion, uninstall it.

A few more details about the problem would help as well. :-)

If these steps do not resolve your problem, or you need help with the above,
please post back to this thread with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Hi,
Thanks very much for the reply. I should have give more details about my
computer.

Um.... it's Windows 2000, IE 5, no firewall was installed as this is a new
OS, only the cable modem was installed.

I'm sorry to tell you that the suggested solution does solve the problem....

And I got a windows XP installed in the same hard drive, it works well, no
problem at all, but just not with this windows 2000.

Also, after the connection drops, it never start up again, no matter how I
try it.

The error message was saying Internet Explorer not able to open the target
page, it cannot establish connection with the server. And in the "page not
found" page, there's one line saying something like cannot connect to server
or DNS error.

Also, when I check the connection status, it's not sending nor receiving any
packages.

What should I do next? Hope the above information will help. :)

Hi Adrian :-)

So, you have both programs installed on the same hard drive? XP connects but
W2K does not? While I have 3 versions of Windows on my machine all are on
separate hard drives and I triple boot, I'm afraid that I am not that
knowledgeable about having two or more programs on the same hard drive. It
may be related to some setting that is not allowing the W2K to be *seen*, or
XP perhaps insisting on being the primary for that drive. I just don't know.

Not sure if this will apply, but, you might take a look.

Cannot display page Server or DNS error or "Internet Explorer could not open
the search page" / unable to view web pages
