Hi I wonder if anyone else has had this problem with IE6 + SP2
If I click on an ad in Google or Yahoo I get the Page cannot be displayd
error but if I tpe in the URL it works fine? Also all Microsoft pages with
the blue bars above and below show as a sort of 3D bar. All my computers at
work show as the normal blue to white fade.
Any idea what is going on?

Hi Brad :-)

It is possible it may be a Java issue. You might try the information here
and see if it helps:

Do you have the JavaScript plug-in installed?
http://java.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=9567

or...........

You might also try installing the Windows Script 5.6 for Windows 2000 and XP
if you have not already done so. The install includes a new jscript.dl

Click Start, Run and type this command
REGSVR32 JSCRIPT

or....

You can get the Sun Java J2SE RunTimes or SDK here:

or here: http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp

Sun also offers an automatic download and install of the 1.4 Java plug-in

Hi to everyone, tried all of the above. Jave tested to be working no problem.
The bars at the top and bottom of microsoft are coded not a gradiant graphic.
don't know if that is any kind of a clue. All other web pages display without
a problem? Also the sponserd adverts in Google and Yahoo mostly don't work
but one or two do without problem. Cofused? I sure am, Thanks to everyone

Hi Brad :-)

There are a number of reasons why certain sites don't want to work with SP2,
and it is sometimes a bit hard to nail down. You might try the following
and see if it helps:

To turn the XP Firewall off:

HOW TO: Enable or Disable Internet Connection Firewall in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=283673&product=winxp
Troubleshooting Windows Firewall settings in Windows XP Service Pack 2
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=875357

Allow active content to run in files on My Computer - Windows XP Service
Pack 2:
http://www.winxptutor.com/lmzunlock.htm

Also....try tuning off the popup blocker in XP. The popup blocker that is
installed with SP2 is simple to turn on and off and is turned on by default.
It shows up down in the status bar of IE and a simple right click gives you
the option to enable/disable the blocker. One nice feature is that you can
enable/disable popups for certain sites rather than just arbitrarily enable
or disable them for all sites. See:

Internet Explorer Popup Manager
http://msdn.microsoft.com/security/productinfo/XPSP2/securebrowsing/popupmanager.aspx

XP SP2 also enables a 'lock down' mode which is by far the most frustrating
feature of SP2. It causes lots of errors on certain web pages referencing.

The other end of the spectrum is:

You may have a hijacker, malware, spyware or parasites on your system
causing this problem. Thus, in addition to running your updated anti-virus
program, you should do the following to be sure none of these are present on
your system. Although you may have already run one or more of the programs,
please do so again according to the instructions below. Some variants of
malware can replicate themselves over and over if not removed properly.
Please follow all instructions carefully to be sure your system is
thoroughly cleaned:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Be sure to run CWShredder, Ad-aware and Spybot.
If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.
(or Spybot - Search and Destroy DSO Exploit Fix 1.3.1 TX)
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4392.html
Also be sure to use the HijackThis. Please do not post your log to this
newsgroup, but to the SpywareInfo or the Aumha HiJackThis forums
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30, to allow the experts there to
evaluate your log and advise you of the necessary steps to clean your
system.

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs
below, download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

Also, get a copy of WINSOCKXPFIX available at:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
and

also
From LavaSoft- all versions of Windows-

(NOTE: It is reported that in XP SP2, the command netsh winsock reset
will fix this problem without the need for these programs.)

Download Sysclean.com, from Trend Micro, here:
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp along with the latest pattern
file, here:
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp
Be sure to read the "How-to" info here:
http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/tsc/readme.txt
You might also want to get Art's updater, SYS-UP.Zip, here for future
updating of these: http://home.epix.net/~artnpeg/.
(If you download and use the updater from the beginning, it will
automatically handle downloading the other files. Place them in a dedicated
folder after appropriate unzipping, and then run. This scan may take a long
time, as Sysclean is VERY extensive and thorough

and......

NOTE: If you can not download these programs from the Internet, if your PC
has CD read capabilities, go to another computer with CD-ROM burning
capabilities. Create a folder on the hard drive of the other computer called
HOLD, download the programs to that folder, then burn that folder to a CD.
Copy the HOLD folder to your HD and then install the programs from there
and run them. After you have IE access again, update all programs where
possible to get the latest definitions and run them again in Safe Mode to be
sure there are no lingering items on the system.

Hi, Just to say thanks to Jan I. The winsock repair program did the trick.
Microsoft pages still don't look as they should but all other problems have
gone away.

Hi Brad :-)

You're very welcome! Glad to hear you were able to resolve your problem.
Good job!

Thank you for posting back and letting us know what worked for you, and for
