I just got a 'pig in a poke' hp 4050N (it'd been out in the rain),
cleaned it all up, bought a "nice used" ebay toner, and replaced the
motherboard (with an 'e-bay used one') and now 'everything's A-ok' :-)

first thing I print a test page, and got a page count, but, it occurs to me:

is the page count itself stored 'in the main board somewhere' or
elsewhere? in other words, is this really 'pages on MY printer' or
'pages on the printer this USED main board *came*out* of six or eight
states away from here?

also, is the page count resettable? (not asking how, just if)

thanks for tips and clues, guys,

toolie

Is the board you replaced the one in the base of the printer or the one on the
side?
The one in the base is the Engine Controller Assembly and the one at the side
is the Formatter Assembly. The Formatter contains the page count and other
information specific to the printer like serial number etc.
To change the page count you need to enter service mode as follows.
Turn the printer off.
1 Hold down [Select] and [Cancel Job] while turning on the printer
until all of the lights on the Control Panel are lit. (If the Control
Panel reads "Initializing", the keys were released too soon.)
2 Press the right side of the [Menu] key, then press [Select]. The
message "Service Mode" is displayed. To exit the Service Mode
press [Go].

Press the item button until you see "Pages = XXXXXXX"
The following Control Panel keys are used to modify the
page count value:

[Select] Enters any changes to the current digit and advances the
cursor one digit to the right. If the last digit is currently
selected, pressing the [Select] key wraps the cursor
around to the first digit.
[Value +] Increases the value of the currently selected digit by one.
Pressing [Value +] when 9 is the value of the currently
selected digit will change the value of the digit to 0.
[– Value] Decreases the value of the currently selected digit by one.
Pressing [– Value] when 0 is the value of the currently
selected digit will change the value of the digit to 9.
Press GO when done

Thanks for all that, Tony. But would you please be so kind as to read
your insructions to see if you've missed anything out? I've followed them
using a couple of machines and despite several attempts have been unable to
get to the "Pages = XXXXXXX" stage.
I'd expect any re-setting instructions for the 4050 to be valid for the
4000, too, though I realise that that isn't necessarily so. Have you re-set
4000s using your method?

TIA of any reply,
DB.

Guess what, I used the service manual to give you instructions (I was at home)
and they are missing a step or two!!!! Sorry about that.
Here is the procedure I have in my day book....
1. Turn the printer off.
2. Press and hold the Select and Job Cancel keys.
3. Turn power on and keep the Select and Job Cancel keys pressed until all
three lights are on and the display is blank. Release the keys.
4. Press the Right Menu key.
5. Press the Select key.
6. The display should read "Service Mode" briefly then "Initializing" then
"Service Mode". Or a similar sequence.
7. Press Right Menu key, the display should read "Service Menu".
8. Press Right Item key, the display should read "Pages = XXXXXXX *".
9. Use the value key to change the first digit to whatever you want, press
Select to save the changes and move on to the next digit.
10. When you have finished, press Go to exit the Page mode, and press Go again
to exit service mode.
I have tested this on a 4050 today.
