Have been getting this error for a few weeks now and can not resolve it. Am
running XP home edition, service pack 2, IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm update
version SP2. Part of the steps I have taken were to update to SP2. I have
also tried turning off the firewall.

Somebody, please help!

Please please please turn your firewall back on.

For advice specific to problems with secure sites, have a look at the first
link - for general advice, have a look at the second:

Thanks Sandi. The firewall is back on. I will check out those sites and see
if that resolves the issue.

Sandi:
Tried all (or mostly all) of the recommendations on the web sites you
quoted. Unfortunately, the problem remains.
A more detailed explanation of my problem follows:

After turning the computer off and unplugging the DSL modem for a few
minutes, I can restart the machine and start IE. I can then go to a few web
pages before the "Page Cannot be Displayed" comes up. After the problem comes
up, I can typically go back to pages that have been previously opened. Upon
startup, I can go to the Microsoft help page (and your page) and go thru many
screens/pages without getting the error, but some sites I go to immediately
cause the problem (I can see that particular page but can go no further), an
example of which is
http://user.icx.net/~richmond/rsr/kinderfeldfrankfurt.html. I then have to
shut down the computer, unplug the modem, and then restart.

Any further suggestions? Thank you very much. -Dan

I am experiencing a similiar problem. Under IE Properties, General, it
shows: "Cannot Find Server", "Unknown Protocol", and there is a DNS error
under the address line.

I can access MSN explorer just fine and can connect to the internet that way
but this is frustrating.

Did you ever come up with an answer for your problem? Is it possible to
re-install IE 6.0 sp2?

First eliminate any scumware.
What You Should Know About Spyware
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/devioussoftware.mspx

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:
