Using IE 6 with XP Pro sp2. When IE is first opened, the first page I
attempt to go to results in a page cannot be displayed message (after a long
wait). If I refresh/reload the page, it works. All subsequent pages also
work. My DNS settings are static.

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

If you have IE closed and click on start > run > type http://search.msn.com
into the box and hit enter does it popup? I recently have seen this with
someone using Gmail as their home page. When they load their browser they
would get page not found, a refresh made it appear. Changing the link to
just plain gmail.google.com was enough to make it work. If you can "up a
level" if you're home page is in a site similar (maybe to one where there's
a link you can click to open the page if this is, in fact, what's going on)
then you might find it makes a difference.
