Bob

I am experiencing a problem with my new computer that I did not have with my
old desktop or with my laptop. There are a couple of real estate MLS sites
that I use frequently. Both allow me to select criteria that will then
display a list of appropriate properties. From the list, I can then click
on a link that will bring up several pictures or other information about the
property. So far so good. But, when I then use the back button, which
should return me to the selection list, I get a "Page Cannot be Displayed"
message. Another back takes me to the original selection screen. I have
the same
problem with a library site after searching for books by an author. I
select one of
the books for more detail, but then cannot get back to the list. Again,
"Page Cannot
be Displayed." A subsequent "back" takes me to the original search screen,
without the selection criteria I previousl selected. This only
happens on my new desktop. The laptop works as it should (back button
returns to the results page from the search). Both are using the Windows XP
with
Internet Explorer 6.0.20900.2180.spsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158. The Internet
Options seem to be identical, though the desktop may have different versions
of Java, etc., if that makes any difference. Any suggestions?

Hi Bob :-)

This is a very common problem, and a difficult one sometimes to resolve.
Try the information below and see if it helps:

and.......

When you are using IE to view various Web sites, the Back and Forward
buttons on the toolbar may become unavailable.

Here's a bit of information that explains what can happen to cause this.

Grayed out Buttons and Menu Items that Don't Work:

It is a convention in many Windows programs and in the popular browsers to
"gray out" items that currently aren't applicable. So, if you think your
BACK button isn't working, it may be because in that particular instance it
isn't applicable. For example, if you just opened your browser and this was
the first page you viewed, then there isn't a page to go back to, so the
BACK button is grayed out.

Is it only a few sites, or all of them? Is the site or page opening in a
new window? Opening in a new widow can disable the Back button. In all
dominant browsers, webmasters using the <a target="_blank"> tag to force a
link to open in a new window breaks the Back button. The new window does
not retain the browser history of the previous window, so the "Back" button
is disabled. It does sound as it this might be what is happening on these
sites.

Try using the Refresh button and see if that lets you go back.

Help Getting Back

Often you can open a link in a new window. Then instead of using the Back
button to return to the first page just close the second window. Doing
that has the additional advantage
that often you won't even lose your place on the previous page.

Another aspect on the matter:
This option is often set by the web site itself, but you can try creating a
new IE cache if you wish.

Hope this helps :-)
