Paul

Everytime i go to certain sites like Yahoo or a few
others,a number of times i get "Page Cannot Be Displayed"
messages. If i use a completely different browser, the page
shows up fine. I've only had 6.0 for a short time and i am
getting sick of this. Can someone send me a URL with a
patch that fixes this or something? If i have to live with
this for another day i'm gonna switch to another browser
until IE can get a better browser. Thanks.

Paul

Im having the same problem. It started a few weeks ago.
My home page is set to my.yahoo and at first I thought it
was their server. But it has persisted and only with
certain sites. Some of the sites that will no longer load
on IE 6 are Yahoo (very slow or no load at all),
harleydavidson.com, match.com. Im using a cable
connection and other sites are very fast. I tried rolling
back to before the latest win update and no good. Ive
tried changing settings, clearing the cache, etc.
I dont get it. It just started for no apparent reason.
Also uninstalled google popup blocker and spy bot. Still
no fix.
May be time to try another browser.

I think I have a fix. I am working the same issue for a
client:

I believe that the issue is that some adware has tweked
IE.
I have to try and fix this same issue at 4:30 pst today,
and I have a theory, but I am unable to test it. Are you
near a computer? If you are let me know. Then....

Go to www.webroot.com and download the free trial of spy
sweeper. Install it, and run the scan. dont be suprised
if it finds alot of stuff. Its a great app. It will
quarentine it by default, and ask you if you want to
delete. Go ahead and delete the spyware/adware it finds.
Reboot. THEN PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THAT FIXED THE ISSUE.

I tried Spy Sweeper. Interesting to note that it found a
lot of stuff that Spy Bot overlooked or didnt properly
clean. BUT, it didnt fix the problem. This is driving me
crazy.
One other thing- I tried the Mozzila browser (I hope
microsoft wont remotely zap my PC now) and it did the
same thing. How can that be? The same websites wont load.
We're talking basic stuff here, not some hardcore web
sites. One site I need to get to is PayPal. I have a
cable connection and for testing the firewall is turned
off. Im using McAffee for firewall and AV protection.
This has to be in some windows update, as everything was
fine until about a month ago.
I think Ill try deleting updates one by one. Ill post if
it works.

Tried going back with restore points as far as 3 months.
No luck......
Whats up with this?

I can browse the internet. But certain sites will not
load. Its all over this board.
For the "best" software company in the world, this is one
of the worst news boards to use. But thats not important
now...
I attempted to remove windows updates using the
add/remove feature. It gave a big warning that if I
removed any of the SP2 (for XP)updates that my entire
list of installed sortware may not work. I chickened out.
My friends pc doesnt have SP 2 installed and his works
fine. I wonder if it is in that update.
Also, went through all my cable internet settings
(TCP/IP, etc) with the cable co. All set correctly.
Still waiting for a geneous to solve this.
Interesting to note that one of the sites that will not
load is netscape.com

SIDE NOTE: when you post a new message to this board does
it go to the top or do messages just keep getting deeper
and deeper buried? Very hard to keep up with a thread.

It may be a HOSTS file problem.
Look also for a file named HOSTS (no extension, could be hidden) rename it
OLDHOSTS.

Since you have cleaned your computer of known parasites I would suggest you
try this forum and see if you have a new variant.

Go to http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads.php#det
Download "Hijack This!" [freeware] or download direct (below):
http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip

If you get a 404 error or Access denied, try:
http://216.180.252.218/~spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/hijackthis.zip

Unzip, double-click "HijackThis.exe" and Press "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button.
Click: "Save Log" (generates "hijackthis.log")

Next, HijackThis | Config [button] | Misc Tools [button]
Click: Generate StartupList log [button] (generates "startuplist.txt")

Next, go to the below location:

HL,

Thanks for the suggestions. I did the HOSTS thing. No go. Also ran hijack
this. Nice little utility. Im comfortable enough with windows that I looked
at it myself and Im confident there is nothing hijacking the pc. I sure it
was in the latest windows update. Everything was great until about a month
ago, maybe two I cant remember. My PC was set to auto download windows
updates. IE6 Help window shows a version number of
6.0.2800.1106.spxp2.030442-1633. If I try to reinstal some IE 6 updates it
says I have an old version of IE and need to update. I dont remember the
exact updates. I guess I could get it if needed. But I think thats wrong. I
think a file called "unblock random web sites" is corrupted. I dont know why
the Restore feature wont fix this.

Again the 3 sites that wont work and of interest to me are:

PayPal.com

harleydavidson.com

match.com

netscape.com

I have no idea what these have in common.

You might be able to fix the match.com problem by getting into the
site however you can (e.g., by using someone else's computer) and
tweak you account settings so the Match Messenger is not automatically
displayed when you log in. And switch the Messenger to HTML while you
are it.

One oddity of Match.com, BTW, is that it uses its own textbox
javascript (I think) routimes instead of just using the browse's
builtin functionality. I am not sure why they do this, because it
slows the text-editing process down a little (and sometimes slows it
down a lot...) I am not sure how that would prevent the site from
loading in at all, though.
