My backup program says it needs a burner program that supports packet
writing. I have a retail program that supposedly does this but I can't
stand it. Any freeware solutions?

Here you can read about "packet writing"
http://pages.prodigy.net/jdjd/cdr/packet.htm

I don't think there are any freeware program
that support "packet writing".

I wouldn't use packet writing for anything important. Both the software
and the media (cdrw) are less reliable than the alternative.
Just backup to the harddrive and burn a cdr multisession disk as and when
required.

I am using it to backup critical files (only a few) nightly. Since I just
had a HD failure I am hyper about it.
