I created a presentation and saved it as a pack and go with the viewer. I am
using PPT 2000 on a windows 2000 pro machine.

I burned all the files to a cd and then took it to another computer that is
running windows 98. I clicked on the packandgo exe file and it asked me
where I wanted to place the files, allowing me to type in the path and
directory of my choosing.

After typing in the information it told me that the directory didn't exist
and would I like to create one, I said yes, it did and then gave me an error
message saying it could not upack the files, that either the files already
exist or the drive was full or I needed administrator access.

Well the drive has 6GB of open space, there were no other files there and I
have never needed admin access before to install and program.

The machine does have ppt 97 installed on it but I wanted to use the avi
feature of PPT 2000 so I figured I could just pack and go. Well I went ok
but not with the presentation.

Can anyone tell me what I did wrong or what to look for?

Thanks an bunch

The viewer is 97 vintage. You'd be better of, just copying the presentation and the avi file to your CD and then playing it on the other machine. Make sure that you avi file is in the same folder as you presentation before you make the link. That way, when you move the files to another computer, the links stay intact.

It doesn't sound like you did anything wrong. Did it create the new folder?
Try this - - create the folder yourself. Then run the unpack again and see
if that gets around it. It might be that Windows for some reason had a lock
on some portion of the directory structure and Pack and go wasn't smart
enough to give you an intelligent message.

The other option would be to unpack it on your 2000 system and then zip up
all the files and move the zip file to the 98 machine and unzip it to the
folder. Just another reason that I don't use Pack and Go. :>))

Hi Sonia:

Thanks for such a quick response. I did actually try creating the directory
but that did not help.

I did not think about the zip idea. If I do this will it include the viewer
so that I can view the presentation properly, regarding the avi file I am
trying to use?

Again thanks for the help.

Note that I said do the Pack and Go and unpack on the 2000 system. That
should include the Viewer. Then Zip it all up and move it. However, you
said that you have PowerPoint 97 installed on that system, so the Viewer
isn't even needed. Just move your presentation and the AVI, plus any other
linked files. On the Win 98 system, open PowerPoint 97 and then open your
presentation and play it.

After typing in the information it told me that the directory didn't exist
and would I like to create one, I said yes, it did and then gave me an error
message saying it could not upack the files, that either the files already

Did you maybe use LFNs for the directory name you chose or for the files or
folders included in the Pack And Go file?

MS got a little ahead of themselves when they started encouraging us all to
use novellas, complete with paragraphs, punctuation and spacing instead of
file and directory names. Sometimes it works. Sometimes not.

Try it with short filenames - 8.3, put on your toga and pretend you're one
of the ancients. It's fun! ;-)

It probably has nothing to do with the Viewer, but rather with some settings
on that system. PowerPoint doesn't use the Windows Media Player, it uses
the MCI player. You can learn all about how PowerPoint handles multimedia
at http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm . Read
all of section three and then check the MCI settings on that 98 system. I
think the chances are good that there is a driver that is incorrect or
missing.
