P5WD2 - Will Win98SE Work on It?

I was thinking of getting a P5WD2 and running a dual-core processor on
it. I want to be able to dual-boot Win98SE and WinXP Pro, but despite
much searching, I haven't been able to find any mention of whether
Win98SE is supported on this board. I noticed that Intel does not
have any downloadable Win98 chipset drivers for the 955x chipset which
this board uses. Should I take that to mean that Win98SE won't work
with this board?

Just a quick reply here. I’m not an expert but I would look for
drivers for that motherboard. If it says Win98SE in the list, then
you should be OK.

I can’t remember if Win98SE is compatible or not with dual core
processors.

Win9x is not compatible with dual processors so my guess is that it's also
not compatible with dual-core processors.

I would not count on being able to get Win98 to work on this board. Even
if you did, it would be highly non-optimal since Windows 9x/Me don't
support multiple processor cores.

I've seen some boards listed as "not compatible with Windows 98." What
hardware on a board prevents Win98 from being loaded on it?

Aside from necessary devices not having Win98 available, 98 doesn't like
a few other things, like machines with over 512MB of RAM..

All you need to do for that is put an entry in System.ini which limits
the size of the VCACHE. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q253912/

I ended up getting a P5AD2-E motherboard, and my experience with that
leads me to believe that PCI-E video cards are not properly supported
in Win98SE. I wasn't able to get mine out of VGA mode which was not
acceptable, so I abandoned the idea of trying to use Win98SE with the
new motherboard (although I was able to get it to install and run - up
to a point).
